Mareeba Shire Council's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Mareeba Shire Council's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Mareeba Shire council has just released a new Environmental Protection and Sustainability Policy, stating "this policy has been developed in recognition of the many natural assets of the Shire and the value that its residents and visitors place upon them."

We welcome statements in it such as:

  • 'Council will prepare for a sustainable future by having regard to environmental sustainability considerations when developing the Council Planning Scheme'
  • it will proactively identify and where possible mitigate for potential climate change risks
  • it will pursue 'development of its Reef Guardian Council Action Plan which underpins Council's commitment to clean and healthy waterways,'
  • Council will pursue appropriate and cost effective strategies to minimise waste and realise circular economy opportunities.

We hope this policy will lead to better protection of our region's unique ecological systems and wildlife.
