Australia has unwisely signed defence agreements that make us a military appendage of the USA - and a target in any conflict between the US and China. It has lost its ability to make its own independent decisions about whether to go to war.
It has also committed to giving the United States secure bases to operate from, as well as full logistical support for its military operations.
These unwise defence agreements include:
-
AUKUS, first signed in 2021 and superseded in 2024 by AUKUS 2.0
-
the Force Posture Agreement (FPA) signed in 2014.
and include the hosting of foreign war planes, ships and submarines which may even carry nuclear weapons. (The Australian government has the policy of not requiring the US to disclose this.)
Before the election, Labor promised to sign and ratify an international treaty to ban nuclear weapons - the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) - which they have yet to do.
Please sign this letter to your local MP and State senators asking them to do everything in their power to:
-
Withdraw from the AUKUS deal which is increasingly unpopular with the public. A first step might be to initiate a wide ranging Parliamentary review of AUKUS to correct what has been a deeply undemocratic process.
-
Demand any foreign planes, boats and submarines entering Australian land and waters are nuclear-weapons free.
-
Get the government to sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear weapons as promised in 2018.
