Cairns Regional Council: declare a Climate Emergency!

Posted on Take Action by Margaret Pestorius · August 24, 2018 7:21 PM · 4 reactions

OUR CLIMATE IS IN CRISIS.

Since 2016, over 50% of the Great Barrier Reef has died.
In order to achieve real change, we must ALL take action.

We, the people of Cairns, call upon the Cairns Regional Council to

1. Declare a Climate Emergency

2. Form Citizens' Assemblies to shape our response

3. Act now to prevent biodiversity loss and climate breakdown

102 signatures

We as citizens petition Cairns Regional Council to:

  1. Use every available means to stop the Adani Mine and the development of new coal reserves in the Galilee and elsewhere.
  2. Divest completely from fossil fuels by 2020.
  3. Commit to zero emissions by 2030.
  4. Invest in small scale community-owned renewable energy projects across the region.
  5. Create an efficient, carbon neutral public transport network.
  6. Support local food growers and small businesses to transition to zero waste and zero emissions.
  7. Reaffirm its commitment to emissions reduction solutions in all areas of Council activity.
  8. Lobby the State and Federal governments to a declare climate emergency, form citizens' assemblies and to act now.

Councils must act within current and emerging frameworks to SAVE OUR REEF and avoid dangerous climate change.
