Must bring a working Twitter handle.

Who’s it for?

  • For FNQ.

  • For those who want to develop their ability to think about the Movement system from their little spot in the Movement garden.

  • For those who want to support the Movement ecosystem thinkers.

About the workshop
Movements - if not particular campaigns - are won by lots of people participating: the more diverse people involved, the more likely that a movement will succeed. An evidence base described in social change literatures up ports this

Campaigns can be won through clever strategic thinking.

Both are true

At the end of the workshop people will have

  • Explored “Community organising” as a concept

    • The role of the community organiser

    • What might it look like today, in FNQ at this point.

    • How to support a community organiser

    • Moving in and out of the role

  • Used a garden metaphor to explore and deepen your understanding of the movement ecosystem and Circles of Commitment and how people move into a set of campaigns, moving toward greater commitment

    • How the digital world interfaces with relational face to face organising

    • Pathways into and around and through the ‘Garden’

    • Hearing and finding the voices of people wanting to participate

    • Shepherding people around the garden [yes! there are sheep in the garden] to a deeper more active commitment

  • Begun to talk about how building movements interact with grassroots electoral campaigns.

  • Tweeted with a pack of FNQ twits

    • Tweeting the workshop to the world just because we can

    • Tweeting insights to each other

    • Tweeted to @robjpyne

    • Tweeted to other MPs, activists, academics and journos

  • Discussed and applied basic concepts for Strategic Thinking for designing and winning campaigns

    • Will understand terms used in movement organising like: campaign, strategy, objective, group, Organisation [as in an organisation], tactic,

    • Understand how a campaign fits inside a movement ecosystem.

    • Understand how tactics should be aligned with campaign objectives.

    • Understand the role of ephemeral groups.

Margie says

“I reckon we all need to be able to think about the pathways into and from our bit of the movement garden. And we need to be able to think about where there might be fences or barriers or sound shields stopping us from INCLUDING everyone in this fight for the planet.  When you are a community organiser there’s a people thing AND there’s a strategy thing. Here in FNQ, we do BOTH!”

Friends of the Earth FNQ acknowledges the first nations of the land on which it works and that sovereignty of land was never ceded. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and acknowledge the pivotal role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within the Australian community.
